The Taj Mahal was commissioned in 1632 by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan (r. 1628–1658) to house the tomb of his favourite wife, Mumtaz Mahal. Well she must have been pretty special, this is quite an amazing experience to visit, I managed to get there early enough before the crowds to capture the spirit of this impressive building.
