As a passionate street photographer, I’ve always been drawn to the vibrant and historic streets of Dublin. The city’s unique blend of old-world charm and modern energy makes it an ideal canvas for capturing compelling street portraits and candid moments. Whether you’re wandering along Grafton Street or exploring the Docklands area, there’s no shortage of photographic inspiration. Dublin Street Photography Festival (DSPF) has become one of my favourite events to attend each year, offering a rich programme that includes guided photo walks, practical workshops, and insightful lectures by renowned photographers like Melissa O’Shaughnessy and Agnes Burger. This year’s festival in 2024 promises to be even more exciting, with categories for both local street photographers and international participants. If you’re interested in street photography or simply want to enjoy Dublin’s vibrant culture through a lens, this festival is not to be missed.
The DSPF isn’t just about competition; it’s about celebrating the art form itself. From exhibitions at venues like Charlemont Square to outdoor photo walks around Dublin’s most iconic locations, every aspect of this festival is designed to engage photographers at all levels. Whether you’re shooting with a Leica, Ricoh, Fujifilm mirrorless camera, or even your smartphone, there are opportunities for everyone to participate and learn. Last year in 2023, I had the privilege of being a judge for one of the categories and was blown away by the outstanding work submitted by Irish photographers and international finalists alike. This year’s event will also feature talks from legends like Jill Freedman and Richard Houghton, whose work has shaped the genre we know today. For those unsure where to start or looking for guidance, complimentary photography workshops and Zoom chats with experts provide valuable insights into mastering this dynamic genre. The streets of Dublin are alive with stories waiting to be told—let your lens lovingly capture them.
