As a Documentary street photographer I travelled to this amazing country where time had held still and true to my expectations the subjects and energy of the people and towns delivered the sort of opportunity that I travelled across the world to make pictures of in 2008. When I was in Trinidad in Cuba one day I was photographing at a fairground where I made the above image in this blog. The sheer destain on the girls face that was captured in the lens adds a poignancy to the surreal moment on the carousel. Taken on my trusty Rollieflex 2.8 Twin Lens Reflex and black and white film in true street photography style it was a wonderful surprise to see when I entered the Royal Bank of Scotland Portrait Award that same year that the judges awarded me first along with a very generous prize.
One day I will be hanging on the wall at the Royal Hibernian Academy and will look forward to celebrating again soon, and was a note to self that the reason I made the pictures in Cuba was for myself and that seems to be the lesson for all artists that work made for ones self is always the best work one makes.
This particular image then went on to be featured on the front of the Irish Arts Review magazine which was a real feather in the cap moment for me.
